If wholesalers didn’t exist, manufacturers and retailers could charge whatever they want and thus making the prices of goods tremendously higher. Furthermore, without wholesale markets, there wouldn’t be a need for such retailers like costco for example. In addition, the retailers and manufacturers couldn’t be competive as well.
